This paper introduces big datasets, concepts, knowledge, and methods used in traditional transportation planning as well as modern data science. Raises cross-discipline ideas for conversations and collaborations between the two. The paper provides a review of methods for using passively collected data via cell phones for transportation planning and identifies gaps that are particularly important for transportation planners. 1
