A systematic review of 47 contemporary research papers related to the use of novel data sources in public transportation planning. There is particular focus on assessing the usability, strengths, and weaknesses of different emerging big data sources. The papers also identifies challenges and highlights research gaps in three categories: travel pattern analysis, public transport modeling, and public transport performance assessment. The review revealed research gaps ranging from methodological and applied research on fusing different forms of big data as well as big data and traditional survey data. 1
